5 Fun Ways to Keep Your Customer Community Engaged During the Summer Lull

The days are longer, the pace is slower, and everyone’s got vacation on their mind—yes, it's summer! Ok, it may not technically be summer yet, but I’m writing this from South Florida in 98 degree heat (plus the humidity–whee!), so it certainly feels like summer! While this season brings a more relaxed vibe, it usually also is accompanied by seasonal dip in customer engagement. But don’t sweat it (which may literally be impossible given the aforementioned heat and humidity)...okay...don't worry about it! Here are five playful, low-stakes ideas to keep your customers engaged during the summer lull while building stronger relationships and fostering lasting loyalty.

1.Summer Trivia Time

Nothing says "summer fun" like a friendly competition! Host a virtual trivia event featuring pop culture, travel destinations, and other summer-themed topics (you can also weave your company’s own interesting trivia as well!). If you can handle all the different time zones of your customers, do your best to make it accessible to global participants and offer simple prizes like e-gift cards or branded swag.

Why it's beneficial: Trivia helps customers feel connected to your community and gives them a reason to come back. For you, it's an easy way to gather insights about your customers' interests while strengthening brand loyalty.

2. Improv Their Skills

Interactive Workshop Organize a playful improv skills workshop where customers can learn storytelling and communication techniques in a laid-back environment. An expert (like me–happy to chat about setting up a workshop for your company!) can guide participants through exercises to improve collaboration and spontaneity.

Why it's beneficial: This not only provides customers with valuable skills they can apply professionally, but it also strengthens your reputation as a community leader that fosters creativity and learning. It's fun, inclusive, and creates meaningful shared experiences.

3. Customer Spotlight Showcase

Encourage customers to share their stories and successes by hosting a "Customer Spotlight" event or blog series. Showcase their achievements, products, or unique projects that align with your brand–while these success stories are best tied to your company or product, they don’t have to be. Personal accomplishments, career boosters and other achievements can be highlighted as well. This digital storytelling builds pride and camaraderie while connecting like-minded people.

Why it's beneficial: Customers will appreciate the platform to share their achievements, while you get rich content and insightful testimonials that can be leveraged in future campaigns. Plus, it reinforces that your community is filled with creative, successful people.

4. Virtual Summer Picnic

Embrace the summer spirit by hosting a virtual picnic! Encourage customers to join with their favorite snacks and drinks while facilitating breakout discussions, group games, or live cooking tutorials. You could even ship out picnic-themed snack boxes to the first set of registrants.

Why it's beneficial: This lighthearted event brings people together in a relaxed setting, reducing the transactional feel of typical business interactions. It humanizes your brand and strengthens personal connections.

5. Photo Scavenger Hunt

Create a fun challenge that gets your customers outside with a summer photo scavenger hunt. Ask participants to snap photos of items or scenarios fitting specific categories like "most creative ice cream flavor" or "best vacation sunset." Encourage sharing on social media with a unique hashtag. You can then ask your customers to vote on the ones they like best for each category, award a prize to the winner(s) and get even more social media traction when you post the results!

Why it's beneficial: This outdoor activity provides your audience with a creative break and sparks user-generated content that can be reshared and celebrated within your community. It also reinforces your program's fun and imaginative culture.

With these five activities, you’ll keep your customers engaged through the summer lull and provide them with memorable, value-rich experiences. So, grab your sunglasses, and let’s make this season one of joyful community-building! 🌞
